The basic step of verifying your address will reduce errors and save you time. This will also save you the embarrassment of having to make address changes twice.

9: Choose Temporary or Permanent

10 tips for changing your address when moving (2)

Assuming you live in the United States, you must change your address with theUS Postal Service, but before that, you'll need to decide if you want to file a temporary or permanent change of address (COA).

A permanent COA is just that; allows your mail to be forwarded to your new permanent address for a specified period of time. It covers first-class mail and periodicals, but does not generally forward standard mail such as circulars and catalogs. With a permanent COA, your new address is made available to businesses that sign up with the National Change of Address Service and provided to business shippers upon request.

If you plan to spend the winter somewhere warmer or the summer somewhere cool, a temporary COA might be for you. This service allows you to send first class mail and periodicals piece by piece to a different address for a specified period of time, anywhere from 15 days to 6 months. If you're not ready to go home yet, you can extend your service for up to 12 months.

The premium forwarding service is an alternative to the temporary COA. However, instead of being forwarded piece by piece, all of your mail, including service and standard package, is packaged into a single shipment and sent to you by Priority Mail every Wednesday. There is a one-time subscription fee and a nominal weekly forwarding fee for this service.

Unlike the permanent COA, with the temporary options, your address will not be released to commercial shippers. That's one way to avoidelectronic trash.

8: Notify the post office

When you move, it's important to let theUS Postal Service(USPS) knows this. You can do this in one of three ways:

  • Send your change of address online🇧🇷 You will need a valid email address to receive confirmation from USPS and a credit or debit card. To protect your personal information, the Post Office electronically verifies the information you enter with the bank that issued yourcreditor debit card. The billing address on your card must match the address you are moving to or from. A $1 verification fee paid by a USPS contractor to provide this verification.
  • Complete an address change by phone-- 1-800-ASK-USPS. The same identity verification is done when you call 1-800-ASK-USPS, so make sure you have a credit or debit card handy.
  • Completed Form 3575, the official order to change the mail forwarding address. You can get the form at the post office or print it from the USPS website. It must be completed and mailed to the address on the card two weeks prior to your move. Matching will save you $1 as no ID verification is required.

After you file the change, you can expect a move validation letter to arrive at your old address, unless you have already moved. Additionally, seven to 10 days after the effective date of your COA, a confirmation letter will be sent to your new address, as well as a welcome kit, containing helpful information, a community guide, special offers, and coupons. .

7: Make sure the whole family is covered

10 tips for changing your address when moving (3)

When you change your address withUS Postal Service, it is important to include the names of allmovingwith you. If you only include your name, your spouse's correspondence will not be forwarded. Depending on your personal situation, it can be a bit more complicated.

If some of your family members with the same last name move with you, but others stay, complete a separate change of address form for each person moving using the "individual" option. Do the same if family members with different last names move in with you, but others stay. However, if your entire family is moving to the same address and everyone has the same last name, it's a bit easier. Just fill out a form using the "family" option and everyone will receive their correspondence.

6: Know your schedule

Correspondenceforwarding spans different time periods depending on the type of mail. And each type is treated a little differently.

First Class and Priority mail is forwarded free of charge for 12 months, as long as the sender does not place a non-forwarding endorsement, such as "do not forward," on the mail. During months 13-18, mail is returned to the sender with their new address. After 18 months, the mail is simply returned to the sender.

The same time frame for reshipping and return handling applies to Priority Mail. You also get the same quick treatment as before; however, the delivery guarantee is void when shipped.

Your magazines and newspapers will be forwarded free of charge for 60 days. After 60 days, the journal will be processed by the computerized resubmission system based on the address change rate on file. If you registered a temporary address change, your journals will be discarded after 60 days. If you have a permanent address change on file, it will be returned to the sender with your new address.

By the time you begin to adjust to your newcasa, after approximately seven to 10 postal business days, your mail will begin to arrive at your new address. If not, it's time to call 1-800-ASK-USPS.

5: Make a list

  • BancomiCredit cardcompanies
  • doctors and dentists
  • Utilities such as gas, telephone and electricity;
  • magazines and newspapers
  • clubs and associations
  • Your employer and government offices
  • family and friends of course

To make sure you don't forget anyone, check your list against the mail you receive every day. Save envelopes and mailing labels so you have addresses handy when sending change of address notices.

After you move, you may still find that you have lost a few associates. Save the yellow change of address stickers the post office uses when forwarding mail to identify the people you still need to notify.

4: simplify the process

To continue receiving emails aftermail officesstop forwarding it, start notifying everyone who emails you two weeks before you move. If you have a long list of people and companies to count, set aside an hour or two a day to get the job done.

To save time, before changing directions with someone, change yourphone🇧🇷 Most organizations will ask for your new phone number at the same time they ask for your address. If you haven't, you'll need to contact them again.

Propaganda

You can use a variety of methods to share the news. Many bills and statements you receive have areas to make an address change or instructions on how to notify your business. You can email your employer or visit the human resources department to make sure you continue to receive your W-2s and that all-important paycheck on time. Specially designed cards found in many stationery and card shops are a perfect and more personal way to announce your new home to family and friends. And for everyone else on your list, changing the address cards provided by the post office makes the job easier.
