It can be difficult to buy a daily missal from 1945, 1958 or 1962... but we have made the most popular traditional missals available in the Virgo Sacrata store. This page is intended to help those who wish to purchase a Missal for devotional use.
Hemass in latinit is really beautiful and sacred. Having a good missal will help you enjoy and appreciate it even more. This use of a manual is a well-established practice. There are many ways in which the believer can attend Mass and thus join the priest in offering the Holy Sacrifice. Many people find that using a manual with both Latin and English text helps them avoid distractions and follow the Mass with understanding and devotion.
When purchasing a missal, consider the following information:
Release date:Try to find a missal published between 1945 and 1962, and certainly not later. An earlier publication date will not include additional holidays added to the universal calendar or the revision of the 1955 Holy Week celebrations. Persons considering purchasing a Missal should consider the disadvantage that it would be to not have these texts, especially when there is an opportunity to attend Holy Week ceremonies in a church or chapel using the revised liturgy, or vice versa, for those using the older liturgy. Avoid any missal published after 1965 unless it is a modern reprint of a version published up to 1962.
Keep This in Mind When Purchasing a 1962 “Misa Latina” MissalThe reform of the Roman calendar by Pius XIIeliminating more than half of the church vigils and almost all of the traditional octaves. HeMachinations of Annibale BugniniThey were in the mid 1950s with the planned reforms brought to us by Pope John XXIII.
There was an elimination of traditional octaves, a simplification of festivals thatLiturgical treasures of Holy Weekwere sabotaged, bringing major changes to the Holy Week liturgies in 1956, including the virtual removal of commemorations and votive masses such asFeast of the Expectation of the Blessed Virgin Mary,Leave them, holy face, the mob against the gentiles, y etc.
It was an easy target for radical reformers and because many believers are now frozen in 1962 (nowgotten up)the supreme pope, you can only hear them at Mass in a free-standing chapel, which might reject the 1962 Missal. The Society of Saint Pius X and the Society of Saint Peter follow the 1962 Missals.
Latin and English:The manuals differ in the amount of text given in Latin and English. While most have a bilingual text of the Messiah Ordinary side by side, the texts of the prayers themselves (i.e., the variable parts) can only be in English. Before buying it is important to decide if it is important that you have all the texts in both languages.
Daily, Sunday and Pamphlet Masses:Be clear about whether the missal you are considering contains texts for the entire year (daily missals) or only for Sundays and major holidays. The Missalian booklet generally contains only the text of the regular (i.e., fixed) portions of the Mass.missal for sundayin our store
Quality and bindings:Missals can be presented on panels covered in fabric, vinyl, or real or faux leather. When buying a used missal, make sure that the cover is not torn or that the pages are well bound and not damaged by moisture or excessive use.
